For 29 years, Roddy Shipman gave everything he had for Guthrie Common School District. When most people think of Guthrie School, they think of Coach Shipman and everything he has done for this school. He dedicated the last 29 years of his life trying to do anything to improve and make the school and community a better place. Coach Roddy Shipman said, “He became a principal and a coach because he loves working with kids.” I think you could see that if you were around him daily and saw how he interacted with the kids at the school. He even proceeded to say, “I miss the interactions with the kids the most.” When asked what his favorite memory was he said, “Every day brought a memory. Way too many to pinpoint a favorite.” Everyone knows him and he had a great run at Guthrie Schools. Everyone appreciated him and looked up to him. When asked what he loved about Guthrie, he replied, “Everything, the students, faculty, staff, and community.” Coach Shipman was a great role model for everyone in this school. During retirement he plans just to take it one day at a time. From Coach Shipman to y’all, “Make someone’s day better.”

As a former student, I had the privilege of being taught by some of the best teachers/people I have ever met. From my elementary days, til I graduated, their have been more than I can count. Coach Shipman is 1 that definitely is considered as 1 of my biggest influences. Guthrie CC.S.D is definitely a better school for having the privilege to have great teachers in and out of school. So to Coach Shipman I say, Thanks for the ride, the memories and your never ending dedication. Love you and your family. ..Roy.

Coach, I want to thank you for everything. You were great teacher and coach. I was so thankful for having you as a coach and teacher. You taught we a lot though junior high and high school. I will never forget playing tennis at Vernon in jr. high and "that girl" I will not say her name and I did not like each other. I will never forget you make us run 25 sets of red lines, or you embarrassing we at the Sports Banquet. I have great memories. Thank you for everything. You and your family are very special to me and my family.

Coach Shipman was one of the first coaches I met when I came to this area in 1996. He was a "gentle" giant who not only welcomed me, but also my girls even though we were at a rival school. My daughters and I were blessed to be able to see a Godly coach who was passionate about honoring God and mentoring others. Thank you Coach for being an example of what it means to "press onto the goal"
