Students from the Guthrie robotics teams traveled to Dallas on Saturday, October 10 to attend a networking event with two robotics teams at Sunset High School in Dallas ISD. The two teams from Sunset, called the RoboBisons, are serving as mentors to our Guthrie teams as we compete in our rookie season with FIRST Tech Challenge. FIRST Tech Challenge is a world-wide competitive robotics organization sponsored by FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology). FIRST's mission is to inspire young people to be science and technology leaders, by engaging them in exciting mentor-based programs that build science, engineering and technology skills, that inspire innovation, and that foster well-rounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication, and leadership. During the visit to Sunset HS, our students learned about design principles, using mechanical advantage, computer programming and the benefits of maintaining a engineering notebook. Students were also able to practice other skills like: collaboration, public speaking, working under deadlines and solving complex problems. All of these things build on our Guthrie Graduate Profile (more info), in addition to helping students learn advanced robotics, design and engineering skills. Guthrie robotics teams are preparing to begin their 2015-2016 competitive schedule that will begin in November. Teams will compete in a series of league events, hoping to earn a spot in the regional qualifiers in January.
