Guthrie CSD is always proud of the students that it graduates, watching someone leave for further education and some leave ready to embrace the world. Lately in the senior class of 2015, a student has gone above and beyond the usual. Laura Wilson has been a long time Abilene Christian University fan and Guthrie Student. Laura Wilson is the daughter of Buffy and Darren Wilson, who are ACU Alumni and both teachers at Guthrie CSD, since they moved to Guthrie in 2009. Even Laura’s grandparents are ACU Alumni. Laura’s family was ecstatic when recently got accepted into ACU. What makes Laura’s acceptance so special is that she was honored with the A.B. Barrett Award, which is a prestigious merit based scholarship that is valued at $40,000. Allen Baker Barrett is the founder of Abilene Christian College, which he founded in 1906. Laura can use this money over the course of her four years at ACU. The A.B. Barrett Award was given to Laura based on academic information, like high school GPA, ACT score, and class standing. She was completely unaware about that scholarship until she read her ACU acceptance letter. Many other students also got the same award, but the amount of scholarship money did vary. $40,000 was one of the highest amounts! Laura has also received scholarship money from Lubbock Christian, Oklahoma Christian and Freed-Hardeman in Tennessee. She has made her final decision to attend Abilene Christian University, and already has her roommate picked out. Laura plans on studying in the medical field as becoming a nurse. Laura would tell you, that great achievements come from hard work, much like these amazing bonuses Laura has received. |
