In total, Mrs. Wilson’s class raised more than $190. Yesterday, the Guthrie first graders took a field trip to Lubbock, where they visited a Wells Fargo Bank to cash in all their donated coins for dollars and then went to Mardel’s to purchase the classroom supplies. At the Wells Fargo Bank, the employees were so impressed with the students’ enthusiasm and how much they raised, that they donated $40 themselves. The students were able to purchase eight sets of letter and number tiles, ten sets of polyhedra dice, and six sets of flashcards. When asked about the project, Mrs. Wilson said, “My students have such generous hearts, and they love the feeling they get when they help others.”
In April, Mr. Wilson will be traveling to Kenya and will deliver the school supplies to Change a Life Academy. He will be in Kenya to lead a professional development seminar for the teachers and administrative staff at Change a Life Academy. Mr. Wilson’s junior high and high school technology students had also been collecting donations for Change a Life Academy and raised over $340. “The students in Guthrie have great hearts and didn’t hesitate to give what they could to help the school in Kenya,” Mr. Wilson commented. “It was a good opportunity for them to think about life outside of Guthrie, Texas and do something to make the world a little brighter for those less fortunate.”
