Guthrie 8th grader, Baylee Horn, has been working for the past five weeks restoring photos for the King County Historical Society. Baylee received over 1,200 historic photos from the museum that had been scanned from negatives and needed digital enhancement. She used Adobe Lightroom professional photo editing software to perform color corrections, noise reduction, spot removal and image cropping to restore these photos back to their original beauty. Over the past five weeks, she processed one photo at a time, applying these corrections and enhancements to over 1,000 photos.

Congratulations Baylee on a job well done. The photos look great! Thanks for contributing to our community. Baylee's photos are now featured on the home page of the new King County Museum website. You can see the photos at:

Jags take on Rangers

The Guthrie Jags took on the Rangers from the Patton Spring on Tuesday. Coming off their big win against Knox City, the Jags picked up from where they left off with high intensity and team basketball. The Jaguars started the game off fast and did not look back. With the 20-5 lead ending the first quarter, the Jags were ready to play. Only allowing the Rangers 10 points the first half, the Jags looked to finish off the game. The Jags went on a roll and finished the game with a 67-28 win. Leading all scorers was Christian Rocha with 24, Bronc Horn had 13, and adding 12 points from Gustavo Sandoval and Graden Garrison. The Jags played a great game and look to build on that with their next game against Matador.

Students from Guthrie High School and Guthrie Junior High competed in the TCEA Region 17 Robotics Contest this past weekend at Lubbock High School. The Guthrie High School team consisted of Sarah Ballard and Cheyenne Killebrew. The Guthrie Junior High team was made up of Levi Jones, Ben Haney and Tristan Story.

The Guthrie High School team placed 2nd overall in the advanced division and earned a spot to advance to the TCEA State Robotics Competition in May. This is the second year in a row that this team (made up of Sarah and Cheyenne) has advanced to state level competition. This also marks the 5th year in a row that Guthrie High School will be represented in the TCEA State Robotics Competition.

The Guthrie Junior High team placed 3rd overall in the intermediate division. They won't automatically advance to state as a 3rd place team, but their scores were high enough to put them in the running for a wild card spot for state. In fact, their last run earned the single highest point value of all competing teams, including all those in the advanced division. They will find out about their wild card status for the state competition in about two weeks.

The TCEA contest puts students from all sized schools, from 1A to 5A, in the same category and allows those school to compete against one another on an even playing field. Every year, the competition gets better and better. This year, the Guthrie teams had the opportunity to compete against teams from: New Deal ISD, Post ISD, Jayton ISD, Sundown ISD, Tahoka ISD, Lubbock ISD, Seminole ISD, Talkington School and Reddell Academy.

These students have been working on their robot construction and programming since the first weeks of school. Congratulations to them for sticking with it, being so committed and performing so well under pressure. You always represent our school with pride and excellence.

School Board Appreciation Month

1/20/2015

January is School Board Appreciation Month in the state of Texas.  With over a thousand public school districts in the state that translates into 7,000+ citizen volunteers who commit their time, their energy, their expertise, and their emotional effort in the interest of the children of their respective communities.  And, not a singe one of those board members gets paid for that service.  Guthrie CSD is blessed to have exceptional folks serving on the Guthrie CSD (GCSD) Board of Trustees.

The current members of the GCSD school board are:  Travis Adams, Brenda Jones, Toby Oliver, Terri O'Neal, Wendy Masterson, and Clell McCauley.  The Guthrie community owes and extends to them a heartfelt thanks for their work toward ensuring the very best possible futures for the children served by the Guthrie School.

Nil Santana Visits the Black Box

1/14/2015

Guthrie had a special guest last week. Nil Santana visited Guthrie high school on Wednesday, January 7, to checkout Guthrie’s very own Black Box Studio. Dr. Santana is the Director of the ACU Maker Lab and the Instructor of Art & Design at Abilene Christian University. When Mr. Wilson’s technology classes took a field trip to ACU back in December, they got to meet up with Dr. Santana in the ACU Maker Lab to learn about design, engineering, and art.

Dr. Santana came out to Guthrie to look at Mr. Wilson’s classroom, learn about the innovative projects going on and visit with the students. Dr. Santana got to interact with the students and watch them work on their individual projects. He was very impressed with the classroom and the projects being made. He said that the Black Box was, “Applying making principles, creativity, and innovation in education.”

The goal of the Black Box Studio is to provide Guthrie students a place to learn and work that allows for individualization, creativity, and innovation.

DJ Ballard

Most people know Mr. Kent Ballard as the high school science teacher at Guthrie CSD.  However, many people may not know that Ballard has a very interesting background...in music. Mr. Ballard has been in the Guthrie family for 12 years, and has since then brought a new passion for music to the school. Mr. Ballard’s passion for music began with his family. The youngest of a family filled with musical talent, Ballard’s older siblings were all gifted band members as well as good singers. With instruments ranging from trombone, baritone, tuba, piano, clarinet, and guitar, Mr. Ballard was exposed to several types of music.

His family members enjoyed Rock and Pop so early on in his childhood, he enjoyed Elton John, Billy Joel, John Cougar Mellencamp, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, The Eagles, and The Steve Miller Band. Mr. Ballard included those artist and Rich Mullins, James Taylor, Amy Grant, The Newsboys, Garth Brooks, Fleetwood Mac, Jackson Browne and Joe Walsh as his overall favorite musicians. Mr. Ballard is often praised for his diverse musical taste, from Nirvana to George Strait, Neil Diamond to AC/DC, and Taylor Swift to Metallica, Mr. Ballard always has a song for any event and any person’s taste.

With all this musical influences, Mr. Ballard has spawned his own musical history. He was a trombone player all through junior high and high school  He claims his experience with the trombone was one of his more enjoyable high school experiences. He’s even had multiple experiences in the musical work force, being a stereo salesman as well as being a DJ at KBST out of Big Spring, Texas.

Mr. Ballard shared some details about his DJ experience, and told us that this was the most “formatted” job he had. “They were very picky about what songs you played, the order you played them in, when you took commercial breaks, did weather updates, etc.  We had program charts for every hour of the day and every day of the week.  The station's music director put all the songs into categories. Then he put little colored dots on the label of each record.  The program charts had the same type of dots, so you knew what type of song you were supposed to play next.  One day I came in and the secretary had written the word "red" on every red dot, the word "blue" on every blue dot, etc.  The bins where we kept the records were also labeled with the words for each color.  When I asked the program director about it, he said, ‘You know that part timer, Mark, we just hired - he's color blind!’”

Nowadays, Mr. Ballard is the disk jockey for Guthrie CSD. He often announces at the football games and peprallies, and made the playlist for the football and basketball games with a rockin’ sound. He’s helped build multiple students playlist, and often promotes the musicians who came from Guthrie themselves. Several students have talked about how he’s helped them with any music challenge, whether it be finding some new tunes or getting the perfect song for an event. Guthrie has become one of the most musically diverse schools in the region, and we have Mr. Ballard to thank for it.
