The Guthrie Jaguars took on the Jayton Jaybirds Friday for the Bi-District playoff game. This being their second match-up this year, everyone expected the Jags to handle business. The Jags started out on defense and let the Jaybirds know they were ready. The Jaguars held the Jaybirds three and out and got the ball. The Jags talented offense went right to work and scored on a Landon Roberts 25-yard run. The Jags went on and stopped the Jaybirds, and scored again with Roberts on a 48-yard run, putting the Jags up 14-0. The Jags weren’t done scoring, they had two more touchdowns in the first quarter both by senior running back Tucker Brendle. With the help from an interception by Zac O’neal and a fumble recovery by Graden Garrison, the cold first quarter ended with the Jags up 30-6.
The Jaguars opened up the second the quarter with a 2 yard run by Brendle, with exceptional blocking by the rest of the Jaguars. Tucker had two more impressive touchdown runs just in the second quarter and Landon Roberts and Christian Rocha both added one of their own putting the Jaguars up 70-34 at the end of the first half. When was the last time you’ve seen a team put up 70 points in a half, let alone in the playoffs?
The second half started and the Mean Green were out on a mission to end the game, and that is just what they did. Getting the ball back to start the second half, the Jags ran the ball right down the field. Capping it off by 4 yard run by Roberts. The Jags needed a stop or turnover to have a chance to end the game. Hard hitting Dion Vasquez came up with a huge interception. Setting up Brendle for a 2 yard run that sealed the Bi-District championship for the Jags. The final score was 84-34.
The Jaguars will move on to the next round, they will face the Chillicothe Eagles in Knox City on Friday at 7:30. Come on out and support your Jags.
